so who won ?

the winner will be notified via the phone number provided on May 26.

I have also posted a video of solving the final challenge in ~5 minutes, using macro recording and accelerated playback. You cah finf the video on my blog, http://dandv.blogspot.com, along with some commentary about how I developed the 5-minute solution.

Wow. I had no idea you could even do something like that. I solved mine all “the hard way”– so I had no chance at winning! That restoration challenge took me for ever, but even if it hadn’t I couldn’t compete with people who had dummy accounts, and all that other stuff. I’m torn between being kinda pissed off that people “cheated” and glad that there are people out there who have thank kind of knowledge. Maybe next time they should have 2 contests– a “cheat” and “no-cheat” one?

Dan,

I commend you for your ingenuity! Good Luck

If google is smart, they are going to check the IP address of all participants and other things to look for cheating, including comparing the performance on the final test to the individual puzzles. If it took someone 2 minutes to do the first of the six sudoku-like puzzles, if that person did it in 30 seconds, he/she cheated.

The puzzles did not communicate with tghe google servers at all during the final challenge. Only at the beginning and at the end. So there’s no way they could detect a “cheat” of any kind.

It kills me how people want to brand “cheaters” but have no problem with Google and Sony cheating people out of a cryptex. Remember all the people who finished puzzle 24 quickly and didn’t get into the finals? How about the fundamental moral problem of a contest designed so that the big winner would probably NOT accept the prize (because of taxes)?

Anyway, I hope everyone concerned about cheating pays attention to what’s going on with electronic voting machines in this country. LOL

well at least you guys get a cool final challenge. in australia we just had to do the 24 puzzles and then we all went into the draw. i think i would’ve preferred the second phase with the cryptex. i feel kinda jipped now.

so, who is the final winner? anything announced yet?

Nothing yet. Rumor has it that they’re having a hard time getting anyone to accept the grand prize because of the taxes, so they keep moving down the list trying to get someone who wants it.

I’ll take it.
